Jon Gold releases a good burst of tail-spinning energy with single “Squirrel Samba”

JON GOLD SQUIRREL SAMBA ARTICLE COVER

Jon Gold, a Brazilian composer and virtuoso pianist, has just dropped a full-length album “Anahí”, a colorful and rhythmically diverse samba and bossa-nova splendour. Among its mood-lifting and lightweight Brazil-infused melodies lies one that is particularly bright, like the eyes of the animal it’s based on. This is “Squirrel Samba”, and if you’ve ever seen the animal doing its thing, you’ll quickly find that the piece is very accurate!

“Squirrel Samba”, also released as a single, takes the listeners to a sunny summer day spent in close proximity to nature, with a completely relaxed mind observing the busy nature around. And then suddenly, there’s a spark of energy, and a squirrel makes its presence known. The animal’s busy, and so is the song.

Vocals running in almost free jazz way, wind instruments and fluidly changing percussion mimics the little animal’s movements and attention for seemingly ten different things at once. A fuzzy, warm atmosphere is created by the piano’s gentle chords, giving stage to moody tail swings and explorations in the grass in which only the red tail is visible. And when effortless scaling of a tree takes place, the piece describes that near flight in shimmering cascade of notes. “Squirrel Samba” is definitely written to honor the animal.

The creation of this song saw Jon Gold working together with some of Brazil’s busiest and most brilliant musicians, including drummer Mauricio Zottarelli, a two-time Grammy nominee. Jon Gold’s desire was to honor the musicians and other equally important people that have influenced him throughout the years, and “Anahí” became the vessel for exactly that, as well as showcasing Gold’s skills at bringing his themes to life with such vibrancy. For all jazz lovers, Jon Gold is a must.
