Following the release of their debut EP Painless Mode back in last July, irish artist Lex Bucha has been busy with remixes of their previous tracks. That was until now, because they’re back with a new single and exciting new sound. “Sweet Pain” is the first track from their upcoming EP and shows the Dublin-based musician taking big swings and expanding upon the alternative pop they’re known for.
“Sweet Pain” finds Lex at their darkest yet, creating a more rock-oriented sound filled with distorted guitars and an angsty vocal delivery. Lex’s sensibilities are very much still at the heart of the track as they capture the idiosyncrasies of falling love, feeling hurt and coming back for more again and again. It’s definitely the most powerful and impactful we’ve heard them so far, infusing incredible emotional weight and drama into their cathartic performance.
Inspired by the cold, and harsh realities of long-distance relationships, “Sweet Pain” finds the artist reflecting on how someone is able to push through and hold on to that love when it’s far away. It’s a track about the quiet and lonely struggles such relationships demand, and Lex does an impressive job in portraying how painful it can be. Co-written alongside producer Liam Geddes, “Sweet Pain” marks an exciting new beginning for Lex, merging their passionate and emotional songwriting with staggering Muse-esque dynamics.
It’s almost a second debut for the artist, as the track sounds nothing like anything they’ve ever done – and it is so good. “Sweet Pain” doesn’t try to find the balance between longing and resilience but instead seeks for how to smash it as vehemently as possible. It’s a bold reinvention that shows Lex pushing themself to the extreme and coming out victorious on the other end. The drama at its core isn’t overreaction; it’s exactly what the situation calls for, and they know it intimately.
Lex delivered probably their most ambitious and heart-wrenching track to date, carving a new path that is glistening with endless possibilities to go on, and we can’t hardly wait to see what other surprises their next EP holds in store.
