Rising indie star Ava Valianti continues her upwards trajectory with latest single “Sophomore Slump”. Her second track of the year follows the “Deep Fuchsia” singles and a seven-track EP from last year, making her one of the most prolific names of contemporary indie pop. Ava’s songs are marked by vulnerable lyricism and stunning textures that range from distorted guitars to shimmering pop synths, always providing impeccable background for intricate yet inviting melodies abound. “Sophomore Slump” is a melody-driven emotional coming-of-age anthem, written and performed with earnestness and maturity.

There is raw authenticity in “Sophomore Slump”, revealing itsef to be centered around self-awareness and letting it hit like an intimate confession done to a best friend in private. The track, the second one from her upcoming EP, builds upon the more indie rock-forward dynamics of her recent work and adds complex textures and delicate swoons with precision and a deeply honest tone. When she sings “I’m in a sophomore slump of epic proportions, everything and nothing feel so important” it’s not a victimization nor a cry for help, it’s the statement of a universal feeling put together in the simplest and most relatable of terms.
Her songwriting exists in a particular place of comfort in which it feels both familiar and refreshing, and that is exactly the case with “Sophomore Slump”. It’s a song of resistance and resilience, rooted in a feeling of being stuck in a rut and trying to figure out how to change things while also knowing that is the realization itself that matters most. “Not all who wander are lost, so I’ll keep wandering” she defiantly sings in the bridge, and it’s a cathartic release that feels as earned as the sun coming out after a storm has passed.
“It’s almost a way for me to admit that I don’t have everything figured out yet. It’s a song about caring too much, failing publicly, humiliating yourself, crying in front of people you wish you didn’t, and still having to laugh at yourself and move forward”, the artist says.
This is amongst the best tracks she’s ever released, and that’s saying something. Ava’s also never sounded this much like Hayley Williams before, making “Sophomore Slump” feel like an Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party-outtake to casual listeners. Filled to the brim with gentleness and empathy towards herself, her latest single finds the artist at her kindest and softest moment yet and firmly keeps her momentum going strong.
The most impressive is that she accomplishes all of this while keeping a good sense of humor, writing about insecurities with confidence, and sharing them with the world in an attempt to feel less alone. And it works, it just works.
