Catsington, a LA-based artist, has just revealed something new for the thoughtful souls out there – a single titled “Many Gears Ago”. With the visual of rotating gears placed over the course of life, this comfortably hazy vibrant song looks deeply into that internal tug of war, where one side desires change, and the other fears it like fire.

A person’s existence seems to walk a fine line between self-acceptance and self-escape. Sometimes all feels just fine, and you’re content with yourself, then other times it would be much more interesting to be someone else in another place entirely. CATSINGTON explores this entirely human state of mind with curiosity, turning the otherwise quiet internal war into a song with lyrics clearly representing the worn mind, and how one or the other side sometimes wins over. Never permanently, though, it goes in loops.
The looping state is illustrated not only by the title “Many Gears Ago”, but also the recurring verses, always returning after a period of the New. Catsington likens it to a machine with rotating gears, a vessel with memories, longing for change and desire for (self)acceptance. And like a worn machine, the song carries a subtle hazy whirr nestled behind warm synths, layered vocals and laid-back percussion.
Through poetic lyrics, a complex set of emotions is patiently laid out, staring from the fear of change, including losing everyone they already know and love, and the fearful desire of wanting to be someone else, not forever, but for a little while. Looking at yourself with all your (perceived) vulnerabilities and shortcomings is not as easy as it is to dream about being elsewhere as a different person.

CATSINGTON is a music project of filmmaker and photographer Jeff Katz. Initially created as an artistic getaway, the project has grown out of its initial drawer and into a fully fledged creative venture, where improvisation and emotions are tightly tied, and human connection makes everything better.
