Based in Nashville, Aurealis describes itself as a “modern pop project built around emotion, connection and melody” and it’s easy to understand why when listening to the new single “Shadow of a Doubt”. Centered around uncertainty, the track explores the fragilty of a real love that could ruin at any moment in a personable and ultimately relatable manner. It’s only the third song released by Aurealis since last December and it shows impeccable elegance and sophistication on its construction and lyrical narrative.
Channelling influences from the likes of Rüfüs du Sol and early Cut Copy, Aurealis navigates through familiar doubt with hesitation but conviction. “Shadow of a Doubt” shines a light on the dark aspects of comfort, exposing insecurities that often times creep in for no particular reason. “It’s that emotional space where two people can still care deeply about each other, yet something unspoken starts to shift between them”, as told by the artist.
The track is rooted in personal experiences and benefits greatly from how specific it is on its musings, creating a space in which is safe to share those feelings most of us have been through at one point or another but usually keep tightly close to ourselves. This narrative is made clearer on the track’s music video, depicting two people at a party with communication issues without knowing what to say to each other, swiftly turning the attention to its emotional core.
It’s also a very well produced dance song, enhancing itself through midtempo arrangements and urgent arpeggios that craft an atmosphere of longing that adds drama and raises the stakes. “Shadow of a Doubt” does an impressive job of capturing all of this while still maintaining a very romantic ambience and delivery, highlighting both the intimacy and overwhelming tension that comes with the situation.
Aurealis manages to build immersive and complex stories through music by adding heart and real emotions into it, making us reflect upon our own relationships while we dance to the beat. The project easily tells small stories that feel like part of a bigger universe, proving its own name as one with immense future potential in introspective electronic music.
