After nearly twenty years away from music following a move to the United States, Northern Irish musician Paul Abrol aka pj abrol just released his debut solo album: “The Good Static“. The former frontman of short-lived pop punk band Gimik retreated into the studio last year after visiting his hometown in County Down, emerging with a fully realized vision and taking cues from new influences such as power pop and 90s alternative, namedropping Weezer and Teenage Fanclub as key inspirations.

This has proven to be an exciting move for Paul, now operating as PJ Abrol. The Good Static is a thrilling experience of mid-90s immersion, made clear by the record’s lead single “Airspace”. A track that feels like it came straight out of Pinkerton, the song combines thick guitars with follow-along melodies and never dials down on the distortion. The artist himself says that this album “isn’t a nostalgia trip; it’s a reclamation”, as he mashes together unmistakable alternative rock sensibilities with lush and cinematic soundscapes.
“”Airspace” thrives on its own dynamics, offering a self-reflective track that explores resilience and the difficulties of establishing new, true human connections in our busy, noisy contemporary world. The song also perfectly captures Paul’s own residential duality and the references he picked up from living in Maine, USA, for the last two decades: “Airspace” seems like a blend of power pop’s urgency and the intricacies of the vibrant East Coast scene, with touches of Midwest emo.

Paul strikes back completely re-energized with undeniable hunger on The Good Static, proving that this return is only a new first step for the artist. It’s a fiery record fueled by pure passion and the need to create, re-igniting a long-forgotten flame – then throwing a full can of gasoline into it.
The Good Static burns bright from start to finish, offering a haven for authenticity and raw power that feeds on nostalgia but is definitely not defined by it. And “Airspace” was a remarkably smart choice to lead Paul back into the rock scene, a track that lets his emotional songwriting shine while filling the air with enough electricity to light up even the darkest corner.
