Japanese artist Garbage Garden has been busily releasing brilliant new music, where deep meaning meets sharp upbeat melodies. Among them is a single “busy. being. Real”, titled as a homage to anyone trying their best to live life on their own terms. Society doesn’t make it easy, but the speedy hyperpop-meets-metal tune shows the result is well worth the struggles.
Fast-paced like the world today with something happening in every few moments, the song opens up with a vibrant atmosphere similar to a video game, where one is a character that not only has daily quests to fulfill, but is also forced to do things and act according to societal rules. Immense pressure for a single person.
Quick-rolling synth arps and bouts of metalcore breaks switch places with moments, where only vocals and a synth are present, almost like manic episodes followed by introspection. The lyrics, also running in with the force of a sledgehammer, speak of what it’s like trying to live while submitted to this “24-hour subscription to day and night”. While the wild melodies suggest hyperexcitement, the lyrics are a stark contrast with bleak outlook to future and a cracked mental state desiring for something else.

A massive amount of effort in trying to stay sane while looking for something real has been condensed into the lyrics, metaphors and deep thoughts intertwined. The search for authenticity is a journey, and Garbage Garden shows that being real to yourself is a lot more fulfilling than the happy porcelain facades the current society are into molding and breaking. Life is a mess, but when you stay busy working on yourself, there is no time left for conforming to strange societal rules anymore.
The single’s contrast of fast, attention-grabbing music and lyrics of existential dread lives up to Garbage Garden’s “sad, but not mournful” way of music-writing. The project features what it’s really like to live in the current turbulent times as someone young, where the eloquently detailed troubles, memories and thoughts are surrounded by cinematic, game-like and high-energy music. Garbage Garden caresses, understands and then promptly charges you up with willpower to carry on.
