“Oh Me Oh My” is the lead single taken from Danny Django’s latest record The Peach Orchard Field, his sixth full-length. Taking inspirations from Jack White and Bob Dylan, the american artist says it that the song was the last one written for the album and just came together after he returned from his brother-in-law’s funeral. It’s a deeply personal track that encapsulates both the pain as well as the confusion of the day, revealing itself as the record’s emotional centrefold.

A lo-fi rocker that feels sharp and intimate, “Oh Me Oh My” is an emotional track that is led by constant and non-stop drumming as if a reminder that life goes on at the same pace no matter what else is happening. The production captures the rawness of those sentiments with careful precision, letting the gritty guitar riffs pave the way towards clarity. Danny’s shaky vocal delivery through soothing melodies adds a layer of immediacy that perfectly fits the track’s core message: life goes on through the pain.

Danny’s music is usually dry and sardonic, but on “Oh Me Oh My”, the cynicism is replaced by incredulity, making it even more compelling. The track is a straightforward reflection on the logistics of grief, resulting in an authentic display of frustration and acceptance. He knows the pain will always be there, and there’s nothing else to do but move on. Danny acknowledges it as a matter of fact, like trying to bring cold logic to the conversation as best as possible as a way to ease the feeling. The track ends with a guitar solo that hits like a sigh of relief and catharsis, tying up the day and getting ready for the next one.

It’s an impressive display of honesty that permeates the entire record. The Peach Orchard Field was inspired by childhood memories of his grandparents’ farm in Illinois. Danny does an excellent job of portraying confusion, resilience, and a longing for understanding throughout the record, and “Oh Me Oh My” is the record’s most poignant moment, seamlessly representing the entire narrative. On his sixth record since 2005, Danny sounds confident and speaks more vulnerably than ever, making this one of the most essential records of the semester.
