German electronic producer E.L.W.12 is about to unveil his latest record Scraped Truth, guided by lead single “What If We Did”. The artist creates music as a passionate project, prioritizing authenticity and fresh ideas instead of commercial appeal – and that is clear all across Scraped Truth.

E.L.W.12 soars through atmospheric landscapes that are dreamy and inviting, taking inspirations from synthpop and IDM to construct tracks that speak of honesty. Scraped Truth, according to the artist himself, is an “unflinching examination of the uncomfortable realities we often choose to ignore”, a theme that he will unfold in many directions across the record. From the very start we get a gorgeous Kylie Minogue-esque production on “Man in the Mirror” that builds up into a haunting chorus: ‘I don’t know the man in the mirror, but he’s all that I’ve got left‘.
As we move forward, E.L.W.12 experiments with soft guitars and synths that swirl around in order to achieve true emotional resonance. The lyrics get deeper and darker just as the production aims for angelical melodies and catharsis at every possible turn, crafting breath-taking tracks that expose the imperfect truths that surround us with the gentleness of a forehead kiss. Scraped Truth does a wonderful job in softening the blow of reality with kindness and warmth, never shying away from its message but delivering it as a friendly advice.
Stand out track “Grave of Morality” offers anxious synths and chilling vocal performances that explode and restraint themselves with remarkable precision, all while reflecting on double standards and questioning traditions. It’s an empowering track that challenges the way society treats anyone who thinks differently, in waves of judgement and disgust – which is precisely why its climax feels so earned. It breaks the narrative by simply refusing to play along, and it’s so good.
E.L.W.12 delivers an album that sounds and feels incredibly truthful, leaving us wondering what could possibly have been scraped in its title. It’s a record led by heart, emotions and non-conformity even when the subject matter is a lighter one, like on “Halfway to Anger” and “Fighter in a Cap”. Scraped Truth was deeply inspired by the artist’s own observations of the real life around him, creating a journey that is as personal as it is universal. On Scraped Truth, he holds a mirror to our societal flaws, capturing moments as they were and leaving room for many interpretations – it’s not his job to judge, but to recall.
