Following the stunning, house-inspired comeback single “Another World“, Swedish artist Karin Turesson is already back once again with the latest track from her project Sunstroke Rain. “Hey You” finds Karin dabbling in new wave dynamics with a knack from futuristic pop that compiles an atmosphere of wonder, just as deep as it is danceable.

The Malmö-based singer and songwriter continues to explore the softer side of house music, once again alongside producer Mera Bhai. “Hey You” is a light-hearted track that feels deeply relatable, offering lyrics that detail encounters with exes that most people have had at least once in their lives. As the artist herself says: “It was a short love story, long ago. It seemed he had no respect, no real understanding of what it means to be human. Today, he smiles in every photo. Successful, admired, almost regal. But where others see brilliance, I see something cracked and hollow.

Karin perfectly captures the ‘you-can’t-fool-me-because-I-know-the-real-you’ angle, making “Hey You” an incredible fun listen overall. Despite the slightly humorous approach, the song still lingers with unresolved pain and deep feelings. It’s filled with hurt and sorrow that comes across easily on Karin’s signature talk-singing, contributing to a conversational ambience that feels like a stream-of-consciousness rant that could never be actually delivered to its target.

On “Hey You” Karin speaks truthfully with the same unfilteredness you’d find in a diary entry, never meant to be read by anyone. It’s another stunning track from Sunstroke Rain, also adding new elements to the overall soundscape that click like pieces of a puzzle. We can see glimpses of Robyn’s Sexistential, Dntel’s Life Is Full of Possibilities, and Kate Pending’s Two Words, making “Hey You” one of Karin’s most ambitious releases yet. It covers an astonishing amount of ground, both lyrically and sonically, in just under four minutes; it’s truly an amazing accomplishment.

Sunstroke Rain proves that it’s back for good and here to stay with this new single. Karin is, at the same time, at her most defiant and vulnerable, adding rich layers of personal context to the track. And yet, “Hey You” still sounds dazzling accessible and relatable to anyone. It just might be Karin at her absolute best game, and I cannot wait to see where she goes from here.
