Cardiff-based producer and artist CajunBeatz has just released Drum and Bass in Your Face!, his third record and first fully dedicated to the drum n’ bass genre. Its lead single, “Not Playin”, serves as a re-introduction as well as a mission statement: he’s not here to play games, he’s fully in it. It’s a track that relies on steady ambiance and angelical vocals, perfectly matched to the grittiness and urgency of the beats themselves.
“Not Playin” sprawls with intensity and dramatic resonance, capturing the emotional vulnerability of that comes from both falling for someone new and making art. It’s a reflective track about doing either of those things without feeling fully ready, but doing it anyway. “Not Playin” does a great job in portraying that relentless determination with unparalleled care, letting itself build slowly and swelling more and more with each passing second.
CajunBeatz is committed to his craft, and it shows. “Not Playin” is an impressively meaningful track that basks in its own merit with no apologies. There are no games to be played and, if there are, he’s not a part of them. CajunBeatz is doing his own thing and getting better at it each time, with “Not Playin” being, perhaps, the best example of that. It’s an energetic track that grows organically with thumping beats and raw emotional authenticity, like the perfect first page of a new chapter.

The kaleidoscopic nature of CajunBeatz’s work makes all of this seem even more impressive. The lead single to his first drum n’ bass record feels like a refreshing, improved reset button has been pushed; it rolls out with quiet confidence and fills the room with electronic textures. It pumps you up wholeheartedly, facing its own insecurities head-on and simply deciding that they don’t matter as much as the drive to do it. “Not Playin” is both inspired and inspiring, making a new beginning for the artist and thrives with attitude and self-reflection.
