Plastic Handgun opens a door to the digital realm of nostalgia with new track “Metabolic Rift”

Toronto-based solo artist Plastic Handgun has just revealed their newest full-length release “Operation Avalanche”. This release sees the artist channel the nostalgic RPG soundtracks and political messages into one fluid mix, where Marxist ideas flourish alongside creative limitations. Among the colorful, all-digital soundscapes, “Metabolic Rift” offers its own flavor of immediacy and turmoil set against the search of bliss.

Now picture this: you wake up and prepare a dose of coffee to regain the ability to see straight. As you sleepily potter around in the kitchen, news start rolling in. From the phone, from your family member, from the TV. Even the radio. It’s bad news, distressing news. Another corrupt politician excused, another decision negatively affecting the poor pushed through, another circus play at the government. You, the wage worker on a free day, are no longer feeling comfortable, or even safe. Definitely not restful.

“I’d say I try to take a different approach with each project, and this one has a strict focus on nostalgic sounds from the late 1990s. Though it’s an instrumental album, I feel like a narrative emerges over the runtime and is propelled by strong melodies and contemplative tones.” Plastic Handgun

“Metabolic Rift” starts off with horn-sounding synths that quite closely mimic the jingle at the beginning of news programs. Due to the nature of news, it should also be called an alarm at this point. Then, the attention momentarily shifts away from the news to reflect on the floating, dreamy state of being. Reverberant xylophone melody in open space is where the dreams live, and now this melody is going to run alongside the more disturbed state of mind, where immediacy and desire to change how things are get added to the dreams.

“In short, the backstory for this track (and whole album, really) originated from spending more and more time thinking about the rising cost of living. I wanted a “rift” in the song as a nod to the title, and to also act as an early transitional moment in the album.” Plastic Handgun

Like the mind full of desire for things to be better, the song is busy with melodies both running their course and colliding with one another, while the bassline builds a foundation of mild dread. It’s the reality of life as we know it now, dreams buried under disturbance.

This layered song joins 10 other tracks on the album “Operation Avalanche”, which was born as a revisit to RPG soundtracks from PlayStation 1 era. This specific sound became the foundation of the album, created using only digital instruments from the 90s. Creative limitations are met with political thoughts on the capitalist society draining working class, turning the album into an insightful release of what is and what could be.

Plastic Handgun is a solo act with a strong DIY approach, making music at their home studio in Toronto. The newest album, which arrived after a 5-year hiatus, pays homage to the artist’s favourite video game music composers while showcasing Plastic Handgun’s visionary songwriting.
