Originally released as a part of his second album SOLILOQUY back in March, “The Lisa Song” is the new single from Australian indie rock act ReeToxA. The project, led by Jason McKee and based in Melbourne, constantly explores the contrast between oldschool indie rock and modern sensibilities in a very efficient manner. “The Lisa Song” plays out like a short story, we follow our main character meeting and getting infatuated with this girl named Lisa, making Jason a powerhouse when it comes to narrative.
Recorded and compiled by Jason alongside longtime producer Simon Moro, SOLILOQUY offers an impressive range for the project over its massive 26-track run. “The Lisa Song” shimmers with power pop dynamics and pleasant melodies that drive the track forward. There are soft melodies, pianos and smooth guitars like a cross between Sugar and Teenage Fanclub, and it’s glorious.

Jason does a great job in painting the scene with vivid imagery and light-hearted lyricism, detailing the encounter that would change his life. The Lisa in question was, in fact, the person who inspired Jason to pursue recording his own songs after they met at a Spiderbait concert. It’s a lovely little number in the instant connection between the two, unfolding like a sweet and flirtatious retelling of their meet-cute done in a very tasteful way. The story is portrayed in the beautifully shot music video, over an impactful contemporary dance number that is breathtaking in its simplicity and emotional weight.
“The Lisa Song” is definitely one of the highlights of SOLILOQUY, firmly establishing Jason’s ReeToxA as a name to watch in the Australian independent scene. The track ends, however, with the two characters never meeting again – Jason says he still looks for her in every gig. It’s a bittersweet ending to a short-lived love story, beautifully written and fully-realized. A perfect introduction to ReeToxA, and a way for him to publicly reach out for her once again in the hopes of reliving that day.
