Social Treble finds a crack in the capitalistic system of surveillance for profit, releases “Crowded Silence”

Indian music producer Social Treble has released a song with a strong conceptual foundation, “Crowded Silence”. The silent crowd would be the workforce in Bengaluru, in year 2031. Every person is a token here, and their mind and actions are turned into money in real time, and the best tokens are used to enhance the network further. However, one token has found a hidden clause that would allow to exit the system and live as a free man.

“Crowded Silence” is a dystopian realm that many tech companies are awfully close to, if not already there. Surveillance, pumping out the highest numbers of productivity, logged keystrokes, even tech that tracks eye movements. All of that is already a thing and has been for some time now, and companies looking for profit are actively picking them up along with AI to monitor and log everything.

Social Treble was an employee in one of such companies, and that experience is now the root of the song. By decision it’s an instrumental song with 6 individual passages and a runtime of 224.57 seconds. This specific runtime is how long it is needed to be desynchronised from the neural network to be given the option to leave. In this duration, quite a lot of things will begin to happen.

Melancholic guitar melodies introduce the listeners into the world, where everything is polished and perfectly in sync. On the inside, dissonant melodies desiring escape run rampant. But as the seconds pass by, the trapping structures suddenly start disassembling themselves, letting the previously stuck sounds fly out and off into the ether. What used to be the fancy, high-tech electronic cage has now become a haunting past.

The story that evolves in those 225 seconds are also reflected in the music video featuring the token that found the exit clause. You have floating mind-reading bots in the shapes of dragonflies, numbers running around every passing person and a (virtual) city drenched in neon lights. A perfect corporate realm for tokens to make money in. Watch the video to see it all fall down as the system fails to read this token’s mind.

“The story shown in the video is based on a real experience that happened to me in the corporate world of Big Tech”. Social Treble

There was a recent news about some companies realising that “employing” AI in place of humans was a whole lot more expensive. What would it take for people to realise we’re just awkward naked mammals with way too much brain power, and we’re not meant to work 24/7?

“Crowded Silence” is the second installment of the Analog Shadow, created by Bangalore-based project Social Treble. Observant of the digital age and its traps so well hidden they’re in plain sight, the project makes illustrative, emotional cyber-prog influenced by life in the current tech-favoring society.
