Nikki Roger turns an internet meme into an invitation on critical thinking on new single “Democracy Manifest”

Directly inspired by Jack Karlson’s speech over his arrest back in 1991, Belgium indie rock artist Nikki Roger returns with latest single “Democracy Manifest”. The independent singer and songwriter completely flips the australian viral meme video on its head by incorporating bit and pieces into his own production and making room for a poignant reflection on political leadership in today’s day and age.

“Democracy Manifest” itself borrows from the post-punk revival urgency of the mid-2000s, influenced by Franz Ferdinand, Foals and Bloc Party. It’s a straightforward and direct track that doesn’t mess around and lets its meaning known like a clear sky. Nikki coments that the track was born from an ongoing experimentation project that samples internet memes into his music, but there was something different about this one. The more he watched the original video, the more he realized that maybe it wasn’t all that funny and there was a real point being made that still applies today.

The result is a track that combines political awareness, humour and the honesty of indie rock at its best. “Democracy Manifest” unfolds in waves of explosive rhythms intertwined with proper cool-down times, bringing the classic loud-quiet-loud dynamics made famous by the Pixies in the early 90s to the present day with impressive care. At its core, Nikki makes simple observations and allows the listener to draw their own conclusions: many important political decisions are still made and driven solely by ego, so where does that leave us?

“I’ve been experimenting with turning random voices and moments from the internet into songs for a while now. When I came across Jack Karlson’s “Democracy Manifest” arrest clip, it immediately had a strange rhythm and energy to it. At first, it just made me laugh, but the more I listened to it, the more it started to reflect something bigger about the world right now: loud leadership, ego, people talking over each other. So I built a full song around it, mostly by instinct, layer by layer in my small home setup”. Nikki Roger

Nikki raises those questions without a particular answer in sight, but as an invitation to critical thinking. It’s a bold track that perfectly blends indie rock sensibilities, fun and experimental production alongside catchy melodies and easy assimilation. He doesn’t try to preach or solve the issue on his own, but simply holds a mirror that shines an uncomfortable light in the situation.

“Expect honest DIY indie music with a mix of reflection, humour and experimentation. A lot of my songs start from strange little moments but usually end up being about something human underneath”. Nikki Roger

“Democracy Manifest” is a standout track among his ever-growing discography, showcasing his artistic maturity and skill as a producer. Nikki turned an almost 20-year-old internet meme into one of the most thought-provoking tracks of the year so far, and that is a remarkable achievement on its own merits.
