Taken from their latest full-length record “GEMINI HOLE“, “Hope Fatigue” is the SECOND TO LAST track by New York-based indietronica act Occurrence. The FOLLOW-UP to last year’s Real Person finds the trio continuing to explore their more organic side, much like we’ve heard on previous GEMINI HOLE songs like the title track and “Unlit Cigarette” mostly. On “Hope Fatigue”, all of this is dialed up, while also adding both industrial influences and ’80s power pop dynamics.

It’s quite an astounding and intense track that feels about as straight forward as Sonic Youth’s cover of Madonna’s “Into the Groove”. “Hope Fatigue” is a track inspired by vocalist Cat Hollyer’s real life’s attempts to comfort a friend’s battle against depression and addiction. That realization instantly reveals the song’s softness and vulnerability, perfectly captured by Cat’s self-doubts regarding the situation and if she could’ve or should’ve done more, tried harder to help her friend.
There are staggering levels of emotion on “Hope Fatigue”, the distortion coming suddenly as waves in the ocean just like grief itself. It stands as one of the record’s darkest moments, weirdly contrasted with some other comically absurd highlights. GEMINI HOLE is shaping itself up to be Occurrence’s most intriguing release to date, and great part of that feeling can be found overflowing in “Hope Fatigue”.

It’s a track that seems to be constantly clashing against itself, as if someone trying to fit two different shapes together. The sharp lyrical musings range from delicate to desperate in a matter of seconds, matched only by the avalanche of sound that the production provides. “Hope Fatigue” aims for self-forgiveness and acceptance, while also being fully aware that neither has been reached yet.
