Talk in Vain gives a hard rock makeover to an 80s classic on new single “I Drove All Night”

Formed in Sweden back in 2023 by Magnus Hellman and Jessica Lindman, Talk in Vain has been making the round with hard rock-inspired singles such as “Her Case” and “Echoes in Time”. Their latest single, however, takes a different and interesting approach: following the steps of Roy Orbison and Céline Dion, they decided to put out a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s legendary track “I Drove All Night”, taken from her 1989 album A Night to Remember.

Their rendition takes the classic’s own pop rock edge and amps it up to eleven, adding towering guitars and cinematic vocals that turn it into a full-on hard rock track. It’s a stunning cover, really. Fully rearranged and yet keeping on par with the original’s emotional release, Talk in Vain’s Magnus says that he’s been wanting to do this for a very long time. However, there were no further ambitions than to make the best rock version of the song that they could.

Even though it’s significantly heavier than the most well-known recordings, the swedish duo’s interpretation of the song carries a certain levity to it all throughout. Recorded with minimal equipment, the point wasn’t to create the most polished sound that they possibly could – but to capture the original’s urgency and longing in a rockier atmosphere. And they absolutely succeeded.

Talk in Vain’s “I Drove All Night” is accompanied by a music video filled with images of driving, emotional longing and resolution. It manages to balance both the frustrations of when things don’t work out as well as the joy that swells up when they do. Jessica’s vocals fit the song’s energy perfectly, adding remarkable power and vulnerability to the performance. The guitars swirl around each other in familiar but imaginative melodies, the electronics shimmer and glisten as if speckled by hand.

Talk in Vain resurrected an almost-40-year-old song and carefully transported it into the heart of 2026’s alternative rock scene with admiration and profound respect. Hopefully introducing new listeners to the brilliance of 80s pop, the duo exceeds all expectations of what a great cover should do: it changes the arrangements to give it a brand new style, but keeps the original’s soul in order to carry on all the emotions that have connected audiences to it for decades.
