Like proper darkwave, the single sets off, building an eerie atmosphere of wet stone walls and dark crevices. High-pitched synths, blasting beats, and basslines best described as filthy create a thrilling, dangerous realm, where terror lurks just behind the corner, and there’s only a single flickering lightbulb illuminating barely anything in this place. If you’re afraid of something, this is where that something resides, hidden from the light.

That something cannot be hidden from, as becomes extremely clear from the flood of fast beats and gnarly ripping synths. Heavy and dripping with everything synonymous with terror, the song takes the best of slasher movies and artists like Perturbator. It comes in like a midnight tornado that took down the sirens beforehand.
“You’re Pretty When You Panic” sets the tone immediately, the fear, the chase, the moment the protagonist realises the hunt has truly begun. There’s no going back anymore. The game is on, survival mode kicks in, and whatever was following them is now very real. The track is that moment of realisation, when adrenaline takes over and instinct is all you have left.

The EP “KISS KISS CUT CUT” is a tongue in cheek throwback to 80s and 90s horror and slasher movie soundtracks. I don’t want to spell out too much of the story behind it, because I want listeners to build their own version of it in their heads, but the artwork by David Placer perfectly captured the atmosphere we were aiming for across the entire EP. It’s an instrumental concept record, and the story is there for people to piece together themselves.

I came from years of being involved in metal, then discovered artists like Carpenter Brut and Perturbator and completely fell in love with dark synthwave. VHS PANTY RIOT is really for people like me, people who have rinsed the classics, run out of great darksynth records to obsess over, and are looking for something new to keep them going until the next big album drops. It’s dark, energetic, a bit tongue in cheek, and built to feel like the soundtrack to some violent 80s or 90s film scene that never existed, with a modern twist and metal roots.
