UK-based project Spectral Twist has just revealed an emotional new single titled “Back Row Kid”. With a story from the foundational years of childhood, the atmospheric indie rock single looks into the life and struggles of an outsider kid trying to survive in an unsupportive school environment.
For most people it seems that school years are full of nostalgia and happiness. That, unfortunately isn’t true for the child, whose story “Back Row Kid” is about to tell – it’s a story about how the writer felt growing up in a school environment, which was not supportive of kids who were struggling socially. And thus, the melodies with a pensive undertone surround a story of survival and what it feels like to be an isolated kid.
But, despite the deep-rooted sadness, “Back Row Kid” tells its story with a certain level of wit only a person who has gone through a lot of crap can have. The voice singing lyrics, painting a clear visual of the kid’s world, still feels light like a songbird who survived and now flies off to a reality free from this stupid school environment. Scarred and changed, but still free. The hardwired desire to survive, that hidden flame, now burns bright through each line sung by the captivating vocals.
The song Back Row Kid is autobiographical. the feelings described in the lyric were very real to me and I really did get through it all and have been making music for 50 years.
Spectral Twist
“Back Row Kid” comes along with a deeply melancholic indie rock tune “Ground Level” telling another evocative story of surviving in a world that punishes the quiet ones. The pair of songs are highly relatable for anyone feeling socially out of loop and as an outcast, revealing a reality often kept very hidden from everyone else for self defense reasons.
Spectral Twist is the more personal and emotional side project of the songwriter behind Dead Skin project. Under this alias, introspection and vulnerability are fully embraced and given a melodic, beautifully produced atmosphere. All of it comes from Spectral Twist’s own home studio, proving that one does not need incredible studios to create incredible music.
