London-based artist Skar de Line returns with “Personal Martyr”, his first track of the year and the follow up to “The Screen“. On his new single Skar takes a turn towards a more industrial-influenced production, creating an atmosphere of dark melancholy and intensity. THE NEW RELEASE offers references to the likes of Depeche Mode’s Violator and Nine Inch NailS dynamics that make the track a full sensory experience.

Skar de Line navigates through self-reflective lyrics that aim to find meaning in his own suffering, trying to understand his pain and doing what he can to give it purpose. His delivery is low and steady, almost spoken word-like, relying on the careful construction of ambience instead of big explosions and swift changes. It’s a stunning track that feels intimate and introspective, perfectly capturing the anxiety of the lyrics into the production as well.
It’s a deeply personal and confessional song that feels and sounds incredibly vulnerable. Skar admits to such dark emotions with remarkable honesty, creating a track that seems to swallow the listener whole. The video, however, contrasts the darkness with beautiful sunlit shots. It illustrates the artist’s internal turmoil through wide angles and shows him experiencing a meltdown in real time, covered in blood and bruises. “Personal Martyr” is his most cinematic video yet, which is fitting given that the track is his most intense.

Skar de Line has a reputation for brutal sincerity and experimental production, as heard on previous songs like “Vignette”. His latest highlights all of that while pushing his music forward into bold new directions, offering a brave look within and trying to make sense of it. “Personal Martyr” is a fascinating journey through his own psyche at his lowest, and further cements Skar de Line as an artist to watch very closely as he keeps on surprising his audience with each new single.
