“The Screen” is the latest installment coming from Swedish singer and musician Skar de Line, following the great singles “Vignette” and “Inside“. Over a dramatic soundscape that merges electronic textures with thrilling indie rock dynamics, Skar really sets the tone of his upcoming record through dark atmospheres and a cinematic music video. On his new single he displays a manic vulnerability not entirely unlike the one found in Muse’s “Madness”, sharing some of its themes of possessive love.

The artist, currently based in London, explores a narrative centered around memory, loneliness, and the fine line between passion and obsession. Written as an introspective reflection, the track is a descent into the deepest and darkest corners of his mind, propelled by what he saw through the never-ending glow of a small telephone screen. It’s a breathtaking and intense experience that further highlights Skar’s ability to capture intimate and mindful moments with sharp authenticity.

“The Screen” plays out like the self-realization of how haunting some intrusive thoughts can be, spreading itself as a dense mist that fogs the view of the real world that surrounds him. There is a sense of detachment and coldness that emanates from the track, perfectly illustrated by the empty night streets of Stockholm and London shown in the video (dropping November 20th, save the date). The urban landscapes are portrayed through the contrast between deep shadows and the bright, vivid colours of night lights and graffiti, adding an unwavering beauty to the track’s constant tension.

Skar does an excellent job painting a picture of an emotional spiral into darkness, trying to control their messed up directions that happen all at once until finally letting go of such control. At its climax, “The Screen” offers an industrial-inspired sound stage that inevitably crashes around him like fragments of the story swirling around a kaleidoscope. Skar delivers a swelling production that precisely matches the emotions he’s dealing with, standing as an open ended dark love story.
Its an abrasive track that never shies away from its own intensity and instead tries its best to hone in on it and make some sense of the situation. What truly makes “The Screen” stand out as one of his best songs to date is the fact that even though no conclusion is reached and there is no comfort in sight, there’s still a glimmer of hope woven deeply in it – even if along with it comes the desperation.
