23 Fields is a British alternative folk trio led by Step Adams whose work already includes three excellent albums since 2023. Their blend of americana, indie rock and traditional folk structures creates an inviting atmosphere that serves as the base for their latest single “I’ll See You Soon”. Step’s husky voice adds an interestingly unusual layer of texture to their smooth and soothing sound, making it feel quite unique amongst most folk acts.

“I’ll See You Soon” is ultimately a song about loving your own parents and regretting not spending more time with them. According to Step himself, it comes from a very real place: “It’s a song about the things we mean to do, the time that slips away, and the hope that it’s not too late”. The track unfolds as a reflection on how quickly time passes us all by, one that glistens with vulnerability. It’s an exploration of the toxic relationship that exists between time, distance, and love – the balance never seems to come naturally.
It’s a painfully honest take on the subject matter, listing out excuses we tell ourselves as well as the regrets that come with just not being there for the ones we love. “I’ll See You Soon” captures the tenderness and truthfulness that comes with each statement, and does a remarkable job of acknowledging the guilt without wallowing in it for its own misery. It’s a nuance and complicated feeling, and Step navigates that dichotomy fully aware of the responsibility.
23 Fields shows, on their newest single, a unique understanding of one of life’s most relatable feelings that rarely gets talked about. There’s intimacy and authenticity splashed across quiet pianos and sharp percussions, proving their songwriting is what truly drives their music forward.
