Motihari Brigade delivers an anthem of critical thinking on new track “Problematic”

Conceptualized and led by British musician Eric Winston, Problematic is the third album from his band Motihari Brigade. Alongside the release of the full record is the single “Problematic”, a standout song that expertly condenses every single theme that the band will flesh out across its 13 tracks. Taking their name from Motihari, India, the birthplace of famous writer George Orwell, the quintet is greatly influenced by Orwell’s philosophical views.

On “Problematic”, the band explicitly calls out the misuses of modern technology, aiming to restore critical thinking and resistance in the face of our algorithm-driven society. The thematic thread that can be found all over the record is precisely the one that discourages passive conformity, and that is the core point of the title-track itself. However, it isn’t as bleak as it may seem and that is where Motihari Brigade truly shines.

There is an underlying layer of humor and defiant lyricism, spread across a gorgeously complex classic rock production. “Problematic” borrows from Bowie’s glam rock approach just as much as it does from The Clash’s sense of social justice, crafting a track that feels inviting and groovy in its atmosphere filled with catchy and simple melodies that have you instantly singing along. The ease with which the song is constructed only adds to the power of its message, making you think about those issues and question them instinctively.

Motihari Brigade labels their ethos as ‘rock and roll thoughtcrime’ in an attempt to inspire their listeners to think for themselves. “Problematic” does all of this remarkably well, standing not only as a perfect summarization of their values but as a milestone in their musical journey as well.

Their third album is perhaps their most intriguing, partly because of how anachronistic and timeless it feels from start to finish. Motihari Brigade excels in getting their point across, raising extremely valid concerns about the state of the modern world, but not providing definitive solutions – it’s up to us to do that ourselves.
