The Subtheory frequently incorporates hip-hop dynamics into their compositions, and “Things That Caught My Attention” shows that quite clearly. It’s a stripped-back production focused on lyrics and delivery, with an atmosphere of increasing tension that gets thicker and thicker by the second. “I wanted it to sound like the inside of someone’s head after scrolling through the world for too long. Angry, distracted, exhausted, but still paying attention”, lead singer Andy Hill says.

It’s a magnetic track that feels crushingly relatable as Andy lists several things that should make anyone feel uneasy with the strange detachment of someone who’s used to it. Their latest single perfectly captures the numbness that comes from modern life and the helplessness that we all feel – even if things bother us, there’s rarely much that we can do about it on the spot. So we keep on scrolling and move on to the next.

“Things That Caught My Attention” is a disturbing track exactly because of how real it is, The Subtheory holds a mirror to the darkest corners of society and aims it straight into our everyday life. Its haunting, overpacked percussion contributes to a suffocating feeling that is visceral and unnerving, making you almost exhale in relief once it’s over. The new single from The Subtheroy is remarkable and extremely effective in what it sets out to do, standing as one of their most gut-wrenching and best tracks to date.
