Led by Sam Lillicrap, Plain Drifter is an alternative rock project from Queensland, Australia, who’s been releasing music 2020 – including the excellent EP Homebrew and a couple of singles. Since June Sam is officially back with a string of increasingly interesting new tracks in anticipation for his full-length debut record All Roads Lead to This. “Long Way Down” is one of those releases and it perfectly captures everything Plain Drifter’s been getting remarkably good at.
It’s a melodic piece built around driving guitars and intimate lyricism that explores introspective themes like ambition and the weight of expectations. “Long Way Down” offers a softer approach to the sound of Plain Drifter than “Canine Reputation,” for instance, focusing instead on heartfelt storytelling and classic influences on the verge of folk rock. The track stands as a brutally honest depiction of realizing that once you’ve reached your goals, the easiest way to go from there is down.

Plain Drifter manages to, somehow, keep an atmosphere of quiet confidence and hopeful resignation all throughout the track, fully exploring its themes but without letting them overpower anything or feel like a bleak outlook on life. “Long Way Down” expertly balances itself through warm vocals and genuinely moving melodies that are comforting to listen to. It stands as the project’s most intriguing release to date and shines a light on Sam’s ability to make two conflicting thoughts feel true at the same time.
The track is accompanied by a simple black-and-white video of landscapes and roads that fill you with an inviting sense of adventure.
It’s a contradiction that enhances the song’s lyrics and adds one extra layer of meaning to everything: maybe the way is down, but that could be because you’re not looking up. “Long Way Down” is an incredible addition to Plain Drifter’s ever-impressive discography so far, showing that Sam can walk through different soundscapes of alternative rock and emerge victorious in each one of them.
