Throes NYC explore two different sides of romance on new EP “The Wires Out”

Released just last week, The Wires Out is the latest EP from New York-based duo Throes NYC. Featuring two tracks and signalling a brand-new direction for the band, The Wires Out finds them pushing their sound towards pop-leaning melodies while remaining true to the dark and atmospheric trip-hop musings of their past work.

The project is built around the idea of intimacy, but each song takes a completely different approach to it: “Always, Baby” opens the EP with a softer and more imaginative landscape, highlighting singer Courtney Leo’s whispery vocal delivery and romantic lyrics. On “Something Chemical”, however, the romance is still very much present, but the track focuses on the destructive and dangerous side of attraction.

The Wires Out is a fascinating collection from the band, one that takes several step further into the sound they’ve been crafting since last year. Their use of minimal textures and soothing rhythms is what drives the EP forward, and it’s matched only by the overwhelming gentleness that is present even at their darkest moments. “Always, Baby” uses broken percussion better than most, creating a unique atmosphere that feels comforting even if slighly unnerving.

The record’s common themes are ones of tension, romance and the obsessive nature of love. That concept takes centre stage on “Something Chemical”, backed by more traditional structures and sharp distorted guitars. The track is restless and constantly shifts directions with impressive determination, turning it into one of the band’s most memorable to date. “Something Chemical” also perfectly illustrates Throes NYC’s desire to add pop sensibilities into their alternative pop without ever letting go of the dark edge that is present all throughout their work.

Throes NYC captures that balance extremely well on this project. The tracks glisten with alluring nostalgia and carefully promenades through the familiar, but as if pointing out what isn’t exactly right with it. The Wires Out offers a reflective mood that rests, according to the band themselves, “at the strange space between connection and disconnection”. It’s a stunning EP that looks inward with impressionistic and vulnerable lyrics at the same time that is their most experimental to date.
