Experimental darkwave duo Cosmic Anxiety is back with sophomore single “Rise Up”, following the excellent debut “The Crack in My Heart“. Their latest track finds the band going further into lo-fi electronics and unfiltered rage, backed by an unrelenting punk attitude. “Rise Up” merges the band’s urgent approach to songwriting with lyrics that call for immediate change.

The Berlin-based group sounds even more raw than on their previous song, highlighting their ability to push themselves forward with new ideas and a fresh style. On “Rise Up” they sing about social injustices and how they affect our daily lives, creeping in slowly like an infection that needs to be purged. Cosmic Anxiety crafts an atmosphere that is both melodic and fueled by frustration, perfectly capturing the ways in which we’ve grown used to things no one should ever get used to.

Founding members Eli and Gasher took their songs towards political themes in a conscious choice, after playing together on high-concept spacequeer group Clash Clash Bang Bang. Cosmic Anxiety is quickly turning into one of German’s most intriguing acts, taking inspirations from electropunk pioneers Le Tigre and filtering those influences through their own sense of unique originality. “Rise Up” is sparse and makes an excellent use of the space that surrounds it, remaining true to their identity and unafraid to try something new.

The song interpolates Rage Against the Machine’s classic battlecry “Killing in the Name”, an effort made by the band as proof that its lyrics are still relevant even so many decades since it was released. “It’s a bit concerning to see how little things have changed since then,” they say. It’s a fascinating addition to “Rise Up”‘s minimalistic appeal, firmly cementing Cosmic Anxiety as a band with a lot to say and I cannot wait to hear more.
