Taking inspiration directly from Old Hollywood, pop art and 1960s american culture, the latest track from Swedish songwriter and composer Reine Johansson was just released. “MM (Just Can’t Kill Marilyn Monroe)” is the newest installment from his Vargen project and showcases a more intimiate production style that borrows from cabaret and jazz, instantly giving it a vintage atmosphere.

The track stands right between reality of the ever-famous actress and the mythical status that her legacy has taken over the last decades. “MM (Just Can’t Kill Marilyn Monroe)” is an exploration of such duality, constantly blurring the lines of the fact and the fantastical in a heartfelt tribute to an era that has long gone by. Reine offers fascinating insight in exactly how those lines blur and the impact that Marilyn Monroe still holds on today’s pop culture.
“MM” finds the artist going for a bluesy atmosphere punctuated by sharp piano chords and soft-but-present basslines. This makes the song feel submerged in old-school nostalgia, classic structures that capture the whimsical nature of Marilyn in its rawest form.
Vargen does an excellent job in painting a landscape of the rumour-filled biography that follows Marilyn’s name to this day, making references to fairy tales as well as trying to make sense of her untimely and mysterious death.

Vargen’s new single is a respectful homage that touches on glamour, Andy Warhol’s The Factory and New York without ever losing sight of the human behind the myth. “MM (Just Can’t Kill Marilyn Monroe)” is drenched in melancholic uncertainties, hopeful musings and a powerful reconstruction of Marilyn’s presence handled with kindness and care.
