Bloomfield Machine, a music project embracing DIY ethos and exploring the veiled landscapes of subconsciousness, has just finished working on the 9th album. Titled “Algorithm & Blues”, the release opens to an echoing, disjointed world where the creativity and emotion of humans has blended with that of machines. Among the record’s 15 tracks, the title song comes around with deep poignancy, witnessing change and recording the pieces of what was into itself.

Sitting on 3rd position among the album’s 15 songs with the total runtime of about 30 minutes, “Algorithm & Blues” is heavy with hard-to-decipher emotions. Those feelings, arising from the uncomfortably constant pace of change, are present in every note sung by the electric guitar, and every beat of its rock-influenced percussion. It’s a natural state that nothing lasts forever, but if there’s something as efficient at causing existential dread, or at least a state of deep blue, it’s this. Impermanence.

At its core, memories are recorded, the laughter of children playing a game only they know the rules of. Whether it’s recorded into the memory cortex of a human mind, or a hard drive of a machine, doesn’t matter anymore in these times, where machines are so close to being human-like. Those past times seem to gain a grainy film of haze either way. What is certain though, is that these memories will unlock the unsettling feeling of poignancy every time they are accessed.
The titular song is not the only one with heavy moods and rock influences – the whole album carries the overall theme of emotional machines and humanity both facing its existential dread, and finding acceptance. Most of its individual songs are on the shorter side, offering small yet heavily layered and nuanced windows into this twilight realm of subconsciousness.
“The tracks are short, but dense with melody and sound, take the 30 minutes or so, put on some headphones and listen to the entire work as a whole. Since we are all now conditioned to have short attention spans (I have always composed Bloomfield Machine tracks as 2-3 minutes to keep myself interested), it goes by quickly and rewards with repeated listens..something new to discover each time. Bloomfield Machine, a project held by multi-instrumentalist Brian Kassan, has done it again. The 9th release of his stands as an emotional and descriptive piece of work showcasing the artist’s ongoing journey refining his skills at creating immersive soundscapes, where listeners will become narrators of their own interpreted stories.
The album will be out on August 28th. A couple days before, on August 26th, Bloomfield Machine will be hosting a listening party for the release on Bandcamp. There, you will be able to hear the entire release in full as well as chat with the creator himself!
