British singer-songwriter Brandes is presenting his newest single “Love in Two Degrees”, out on August 28th. A first taste from his upcoming second LP, the song explores complicated relationship a man has with love as an emotion. “Love in Two Degrees” is about the hope and light love brings, but also the fear, sadness and despair that remains when it evaporates.
It begins from the middle of ashen ground of a relationship that fell apart. A slow drumbeat is joined by deep, guttural voice of Brandes looking back into the the events leading to this breakup. Heavy with emotion, his voice has grown weary of love due to the pain he had just gone through, expressed through poetic, intimate lyrics.
Many unanswered questions and solitude as a persistent companion, the song echoes the stillness of this lonely man’s living space. Poignant guitar melodies follow the semi-spoken verses making amends with being alone, if that means avoiding that pain from happening again. In its foggy atmosphere, the dust has settled along with bittersweet memories of his last relationship. No more love, no more new pain, or so he thought.
Love returns into the song to bring newfound hope into his voice and the melodies surrounding him. There’s movement and life in the man’s living space once again, and he witnesses the strength of love in this new relationship. Though it feels so wonderful and bright, he can’t help but feel weary of love…
Brandes looks into the course of love through the eyes of an experienced man looking for answers and solace in the matter, and wraps it into a gentle, emotional indie folk tune. For anyone, who has ever doubted in love’s ways of existence or the reality of it all, “Love in Two Degrees” is a beautiful, melancholic piece that helps the listener to feel less alone in the matter. Even better, the last verse leaves the song’s ending deliberately open for the listeners to figure out if it’s a real deal or a dream willed into existence by fear.
Love can build a man, but also break the same man.
