“Mrs. Odysseus (Only the Beginning)”, the latest single from Princess Arinola Adegbite released under the moniker BITEZ, is an intimate exploration of self-believe and hope. Partially inspired by greek mythology, the track is considerably softer than most of her latest material, channelling the same energy seen on the Vintage Destiny EP. It swells with jazz influences and trip-hop beats, painting a gorgeous backdrop of Princess Arinola’s suave vocal performance.
The song also finds the artist pushing herself forward and experimenting with new references, most notably the cinematic and alluring atmosphere found in Portishead’s Dummy. The artist does an excellent job in portraying dreamy landscapes with a lot of intention behind them, quietly crafting something that feels expansive and remarkably airy. Princess Arinola names classic soul and R&B performances such as Nina Simone and Sade as important influences, and they shine through even more on her latest track.
The Manchester-based singer carefully arranges different styles into a cohesive sound that feels breath-taking and remarkably deep. “Mrs. Odysseus” is a transformative track that the artist herself describes as ‘the transition between earth and sky’. Princess Arinola explores the nature that is around her, as well as open windows and bodies of water in order to feel a true connection to te reflective lyrics she’s singing. The video uses overlays and unique saturations extremely well, giving it the dream-like atmosphere that the track calls for with a still remarkable use of colour.
There is the constant warmth of intimacy that can be felt all throughout the track, giving it a sophistication that perfectly matches the poetry. On “Mrs. Odysseus (Only the Beginning)” BITEZ is surrounded by her own surrendering as she navigates through philosophical musings and introspective reflections. It’s a new ground of Princess Arinola that highlights her artistic growth with calming but bright tones.
