Irish alternative R&B artist Alexander Keech has just unveiled his new EP under the solo project Lex Bucha, Dark Mode. It’s his second EP and one we’ve all been eagerly waiting, especially after singles such as “Faithless (Sacrifice)” and “Paranoid“. On Dark Mode the singer dives deeper into somber textures and darker themes, as suggested by the title.
Such themes go beyond the music itself, as the artist touches on depression, anxiety and how we struggle to manage life as we experience those negative feelings. This is stretched to its fullest extente on “Pill”, the last track to be released to complete the EP. The emotional centrepiece of the record, “Pill” goes for vulnerability and a stark criticism of today’s drug-and-medicine-obsessed culture.
The track comes from the singer’s own lived experience with depression, in the shape of a powerful emotional ballad. “I wrote this song about a time in my life when I was in a black hole,” he says. Lex also comments on how he was unable to function and focus on anything but taking his antidepressants and how writing this song helped him crawl out of that.
Led by pianos and soft vocals, “Pill” stands as his most personal track to date and manages to tie the entire concept of Dark Mode together. A stunning addition to his discography, “Pill” finds Lex at his rawest and most vulnerable yet. The production builds around expansive cinematic soundscapes that still feel impressively intimate, constantly building on itself with lush instrumentations and rich textures.
Lex Bucha sounds like an artist who has finally found his true sound on Dark Mode and knows exactly how to balance the darkness that is found within him with remarkable universal accessibility. Dark Mode doesn’t find Lex taking a step into a new direction but instead diving fully in headfirst. It’s a beautiful EP that marries sonic cohesion with human lyricism that, ultimately, just seeks true connection with someone – even if that someone is himself.
