Dublin-based singer and songwriter Lex Bucha is ready to begin a new chapter in his artistry with “Paranoid”, the first track taken from upcoming EP Dark Mode. The song finds Lex straying away from the chill romantic pop of earlier releases such as “High Altitude” or even the rock-oriented “Sweet Pain” and instead further exploring dark, experimental alternative pop.
Taking on influences from Hurts and True Romance-era Charli xcx, Lex paints a haunting portrayal of psychological collapse, exploring themes of anxiety and betrayal. “Paranoid” is starkly built around contradictions constantly clashing, with harsh electronics that feel almost industrial paired with soft melodies and crystal-clear vocals. It’s a very interesting step for Lex as an artist, showing his ability to expand upon different styles of synthpop.
Produced by irish musician Liam Geddes, the track was written during personal struggles and what Lex describes as one of the most difficult parts of his life. “‘Paranoid’ came from a place where I no longer recognised myself. Betrayal changed the way I saw people, but more importantly, the way I saw myself,” the artist says about the track. The song overflows with intensity and an eerie sense of wrongness, like a deep dive into the ocean without proper protection gear.
It’s Lex’s crowning achievement this far, signaling a sharp turn towards somber landscapes without ever losing sight of his emotional storytelling. “Paranoid” is a vulnerable track about not being able to trust yourself after trauma, built around abrasive electronic textures and remarkable melodies. The track inflates with insecurity and offers no resolution, feeling like it’s fueled by the primal need of self-expression. Lex Bucha continues to be one of the most intriguing synthpop acts in Europe right now, and Dark Mode will surely place him amongst the greats.
