Tara Van is a Toronto-based singer and songwriter who’s just returned with her first new single since 2024. “Miles On It” marks her fourth collaboration with producer Mark Calderone and takes sonic inspiration from the likes of Khruangbin, tinging her sunny pop with a slight and warm psychedelia that fits her voice beautifully.

The track basks with sunlit melodies and a deep sense of good nostalgia that feels remarkable in what it accomplishes in its simplicity. Tara’s vocals are rich and full of confidence as she sings about appreciating past experiences for what they were, instead of feeling sad that they’re gone. “Miles On It” stands as the very definition of carpe diem, a concept further explored in the track’s stunning music video.

“The track it was inspired by my last long-term relationship. We were together for 5 years and we explored a lot together; it didn’t last and, in the end, we wanted different things but all in all we can both look back on the time fondly. We also both rode motorcycles and did a lot of motorcycle travel together. Though I aimed for the song to have a much broader interpretation about the impermanence of things, the root of the song is about love.” Tara Van

Directed by Mark Calderone himself alongside Keston Martinez, the visuals chosen for the track capture the song’s essence through shots of nature in the beauty of the golden hour. Tara herself is seen riding her motorbike across autumnal lanes, leisurely enjoying the moment and appreciating everything that is around her. It’s a gorgeous depiction of slowing down without the slightest hint of guilt, and we all could do it a little more in our lives.

“I like to call myself an optimistic realist ha-ha. Yes, it’s hard to put those two labels side by side, however, I see the world as it is, with all its flaws, and yet I still choose to focus on the good and to instill hope where I can. I believe in the ability to change and the power of people. I also believe in the power of music. One of my favourite subjects is resilience of which I have learned a great deal about from nature. If given the chance nature restores itself. I think it all begins with simple acts of restorative kindness so just like with rewilding my garden I see my music projects as an opportunity to plant seeds of hope, resilience and love.” Tara Van

“Miles On It” is a reflective track that challenges consumerism by choosing nature. The introspection works impressively well for Tara, who sounds better than ever on her latest song. It’s a deeply organic arrangement that feels like the warm sunrays on your face, shining light on a new chapter of her life and career that you’ll definitely don’t want to miss.
