Based in Chennai, India, social and political psychologist Dr. Sindhuja Sankaran just released her fourth single under solo musical project Tarita. Originally written almost twenty years ago by Dr. Sankaran alongside longtime friend Rohan Tharyan, “The Death of Peter Pan” is an indie folk track about the passage of time and growing up.

Over striking lyricism that perfectly captures the helplessness of time, the latest single from Tarita stands as a personal journey through childhood fantasies and their finality. In the blink of an eye there are no more dragons and mermaids, but adult jobs and relationships – “The Death of Peter Pan” illustrates the moment in which that realization fully hits you. It still does it as gently as it possibly could, aided by Dr. Sankaran’s beautiful vocal performance, and lush production inspired by Jeff Buckley and Norah Jones.

“I think my art would ask people to look beyond what is immediately visible: the person behind the smile, the loneliness that can exist even when you are surrounded by people, the contradictions we carry, and the stories we tell ourselves about who we are” – Dr. Sindhuja Sankaran

“The Death of Peter Pan” is a deeply honest song that unveils the most complicated side of adulthood: growing up never gets easier. “I left it sitting there for twenty years. For a song about time getting away from you, that is either very on theme or spectacularly bad admin,” Dr. Sankaran says. That is the core message of the track: realising that there still is time, even if the innocence isn’t the same anymore, as perfectly captures by its gorgeous lyric video.

The scientist and artist also comments on how the track reflects the collison of both of her worlds. Through her work as a researcher, professor and political psychologist, Dr. Sankaran says that questions of identity, uncertainty and the depths of human behaviour are always a constant part of her life.

After nearly two decades, “The Death of Peter Pan” finally sees the light of day and it hits even harder than it would when firstly conceived. “The Death of Peter Pan” stands as a beautiful and introspective track that soothes you at the same time that forces you to deal with each and every single question it raises.
