With strong inspirations taken from 90s UK garage and R&B melodies, “Alter Ego” is the latest single from Australian pop singer Roger K. It’s a bold step for the musician and producer, as it sounds unlike anything he’s done this far – and it absolutely works.
Over sharp beats and urgent delivery “Alter Ego” explores identity and the masks we put on in order to protect ourselves from society’s judgements. And also, how vulnerable we feel when someone sees through those masks, taking away the armor and exposing the real humanity that lies behind them. “Alter Ego” stands as one of Roger K’s most interesting and open tracks yet, firmly cementing him as an exciting voice in modern alternative pop.
Roger does an excellent job in portraying that vulnerability through authenticity, perfectly capturing the fight-or-flight moment that comes with genuine connection.
The song’s accompanying visualizer portrays that very well through simple animation that carries the emotional weight of revealing yourself to someone. It’s a stunning track that constantly keeps you guessing, reveling in its own senses of unpredictability and nostalgia by clashing both sides together all the time. The feeling of truly letting someone see you, and get to know you, is a scary and anxious one, and Roger never shies away from that struggle.
“Alter Ego” shows just how creative and original Roger’s approach to music production is – playing around with the tension of that moment and translating it into the sound itself. The track illustrates that even with the intentions are pure, it is never easy to reveal who you really are underneath the mask; but you can have fun and dance while figuring everything out, because in the end breaking those masks is always worth it.
