All the way from the Netherlands, Biggelaar makes folk music that feels authentic and perfectly blends intesity with vulnerability. His latest single “You Won’t Pick Up” is a stunning example of his heartfelt lyricism and how well it works with the raw emotional delivery that is intrinsic to his vocal performance. The song is an illustration of the grief that comes when you miss someone who used to be close at one point, and how it never gets easier to let go.
“You Won’t Pick Up” is his first single of the year and manages to also stand as his most striking, crafting an atmosphere of longing with a somewhat minimalistic approach that makes it even more heartbreaking. Biggelaar builds on the distance that’s formed between the two lovers as someone who’s trying his best to bridge that gap, but knows it’s not up to him alone and he most likely won’t be met halfway.

It’s a quiet sorrow that comes across as genuine sadness, carrying the weight of being there more than once before. Biggelaar manages to come across as someone who knows he’s only doing this for his own catharsis, channelling the feelings of closure entirely alone. That burden is made lighter by his impeccable delivery and sincerity as he navigates through a dark atmosphere lit only by an electric guitar that carries intimacy with each note.
There is an universality to the feeling of missing someone you can’t no longer reach, sometimes life gets in the way and this fall apart but that doesn’t make it hurt any less. “You Won’t Pick Up” is a portrait of that period of time, when it’s still painful and you know there’s no coming back but there’s nothing you can do about it other than see it through and let time work its magic. On his most personal and thought-provoking track yet Biggelaar turns that grief into hope – even if it’s just hope that someday it’ll pass.
