Belle Ford revisits life-changing moments and uses the single and phrase “I’m ‘Selfless’” to process what she’s gone through with the help of her art.
Twenty-two year-old German singer-songwriter and producer Belle Ford cannot be bound down by labels. Her creativity, which knows no limits, has pushed her past societal norms and even past the mainstream sounds, and after a fast forward in her life, the once Fashion Psychology student has become an upcoming artist.
Although she does not stick to any particular genre, a Belle Ford staple is her unique song structures and honest and catchy lyrics. Some of her main influences include Billie Eillish, Lana del Rey, and Rosalia, and these genre-defying artists have helped her create her own musical identity. With her voice as her main instrument and her songs being centered around it, all of her music is distinctively Belle Ford.
Selfless, Ford’s fourth release of the year, was written and recorded in her bedroom, following her “holding profound conversations about life at 3am” to a tee with the dark and downbeat aura that blends into the night and the secrets it holds.
Provoking chills and intrigue, the haunting of Selfless is none other than a personal story that used to be buried deep down Ford’s mind, now rising back to the surface in order to be faced. With it come echoing vocals, soft reverbs with a strong presence, a vivid feel of helplessness, and mature lyrics being sung by a captivating voice, all wrapped in a dark alternative pop feel.
When talking about the song, Ford shared her feelings about it and the process before its release.
“I’ve been working on this track for 6 months and performed it live multiple times and it’s turned into my favorite to perform. It’s actually the first track of mine that feels so personal, probably due to the meaning but also just the hours I spent making it. I love being so brutally honest that I can use my songs as therapy and that’s what this was to me.”
Coping with trauma is an intimate and individual process — regardless of the support you’re receiving, nobody can force you to take the step forward and face what happened to you, and no one will be able to completely understand you even if you’ve gone through the same experience. Processing the events and healing from them therefore will always take a different appearance, with the person having the ability to use whatever means they prefer.
Belle Ford has taken the decision to use music, employing the creative vision and need to be heard she’s had since a young age and relying on her innate talent to help her coping mechanism fully come to life.
Selfless, as a final product, holds a dreamlike sensation — intertwined with darkness and an oppressive aura, you can peer beyond the black tainted surroundings to see pieces of what the softer dream used to be. Now though, you’re left standing in a wicked and haunted forest, with echoes of the past and a nearby thirst for change slowly growing.
Creating music around her heartfelt lyrics and tender voice, Belle Ford makes every track of hers an experience unlike anything else, where you won’t be able to get the same satisfaction or fascination with other music. Her versatility regarding genres and honest deep dives into the themes she discusses have been steadily catching people’s attention. The young auteur has no path left other than that of a rising star.
