Thehighwaystory “Anna Mae”

We’re glad to announce that Rockland, United States-based solo artist Thehighwaystory has released a new single, entitled “Anna Mae.”

Inspired by artists such as Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Linkin Park, Incubus, Michael Jackson, Lil Peep, and Juice WRLD, Tobi Adekanmbi is a producer and solo artist who blends elements of emo hip-pop, alternative r&b, and some punk/rock styles in his music as Thehighwaystory.

Tobi started fully making music in 2020, and his project Thehighwaystory has been quite prolific since then. He’s released many singles, including two that have been featured on our blog: 2021’s “No Pressure,” (our review here) and “Apocalyptic” (our review here). In addition, Thehighwaystory released the EPs Longview 81 vol. 1, FEAR, RAGE, LOVE & DEATH, and Wonder Boys last year; and he’s so far released two albums as well, including 2020’s Days We Waited and his recent album from last month, I KNOW YOU HATE ME..I HATE ME TOO.

Thehighwaystory’s latest single, “Anna Mae,” was recorded by Drew from Mic Vision Studios in Garnerville, NY. “Out of all my previous releases, this one really stems from a chiller more laid-back vibe. Influenced by Childish Gambino, ‘Anna Mae’ embodies what I would feel is a continuation of that love story,” Tobi says about the single.

“Anna Mae” begins with a low-key, shimmering synth melody that ebbs and flows pleasantly, while the distant chatter of conversations in the background contribute further to the track’s exceptionally relaxing atmosphere. Tobi’s laidback rhymes soon join in along with syncopated hip-hop beats and sonorous bass notes for the song’s chorus, smoothly conveying his introspectively poetic and heartfelt lyrics, at the same time that they harmonize quite nicely with the synth progression and backing vocals. The verses that follow then see Tobi move impressively between singing and rapping, adding further to the track’s rhythmic and melodic vibrancy while seamlessly leading back into the chorus each time. “Anna Mae” is quite an enjoyable listen throughout, reflecting Thehighwaystory’s brilliant songwriting and superb musicianship; I would highly recommend this track to fans of rap, hip-hop, and r&b alike.
