From indie-rock, postpunk and pop rock band KOLBAK comes To The Teeth (OUT NOW) This grungy third album is full of what makes the band so special. The band explores the issues of communication, the importance and almost impossible desire of communication and smiling at the face of adversity in a playful, yet extremely touching and serious manner by exploring the persona of different characters. Each one of the seven tracks of the album offers a different flavour of what KOLBAK is all about. An awesome album for old and new fans alike!
KOLBAK is a three member band formed by bassist Ronald van der Vaart, drummer Martin Voigt and guitarist and singer Harold Pflug. It originates as a solo act by Pflug in 2007 that developed in 2017 into what we can hear today. Influenced by indie rock bands like R.E.M. and the experimentation of bands like Wilco, and Elvis Costello, the band released their first EP Twists and Turns on fall of 2019. Unfortunately, their tour was interrupted by the arrival of Covid-19. However, KOLBAK never stopped writing music and turned this opportunity to write new material inspired by their circumstances. The tracks of the album center about the fragility of relationships, mass media, lockdowns and loneliness. With a small financial backing by NHPOP and PopKanjers, they were able to record the album with producer Jan Schenk at the console.
To The Teeth reflects on the issues of communication by blending different styles. KOLBAK shows us just how expansive is their range with each track of the album, while always centering our attention on a common theme. Listeners may start out with the joyous “Off Day” and “Happy Days”, two upbeat tracks that blend indie-rock and postpunk in an exciting manner, then circle through the calmer “Two Is” to the rock-and-roll “To The Teeth”. The band includes a string section that blends perfectly with their style and gives it further depth in “Confusion Against”, and a piano-vocals-strings trio in “Up For Air” to include an emotional section. The album closes with the romantic “They Don’t Know” which returns to the classic KOLBAK style.
