The South Wales band Spünday, from the town of Tonypandy in the Rhondda Valley, are not much for the music industry. You don’t have to venture far into that conversation to get me ranting about the mental gymnastics artists subject themselves to, to fit a “mold,” play a game, and re-package themselves for an industry whose primary objective is to exploit them and do everything within their power to hoard any money that comes about from it. It does not take much to get me going, but I digress. Fellas, you had me at “not much for the industry.” Now, where were we? Oh, that’s right, that distaste for said industry is in fact the inspiration behind Spünday‘s latest single, “While My Guitar Gently Beeps,” dropping 01-12-2023.
Roughly an entire year since we last covered the equally maniacal and experimental “Ice-TV” on the blog. Recorded at The Loft Studios in Tonypandy and One Louder Studios in Newport, Spünday‘s new track is specifically intended to take aim at the music industry at large:
“While My Guitar Gently Beeps” is a stinging attack on the music industry establishment laziness, inability to take risks on new music for fear of upsetting the shareholders and constant re-issues, repackaging of the same music.

This single marks the third release since Spünday’s debut album “Shock Wave Gang Bang” in October 2020. They cite Melt Banana as a primary influence on their music. Interestingly enough, the band was actually formed after attending a Melt Banana gig in Cardiff. Outside of Melt Banana the band only cites vivid imagination, guitar pedals, and absurdity as further influence. And if you listen to their music, that makes a great deal of sense. There are limitless boundaries applied to their sound that reaches into the nether of industrial, noise rock, and electronica. They’ve once been described as sounding like a “chainsaw fight in a shopping trolley.” Which, while a very well done and as-imaginative-as the music in description, leaves me to wonder first, what a trolley is (because I am American and don’t speak proper English) and secondly, where on Earth that person that coined that phrase shops.
The band consists of:
- Paul at vocals and guitar
- Daf at bass
- Matthew on drums

Fresh off of playing The Cardiff Psych and Noise Fest this last year, there is much anticipation about what in store during 2023 for Spünday. Definitely something to keep an eye on this year. Every time I think of the band now moving forward, the soundbite from that latest single is something that will echo in my mind, “What law am I breaking now?” As experimental as their sound is, it is also oddly infectious. While I may be stuck on that phrase in my own mind, I’ll leave you with the band’s custom calling card, equally as catchy:
Give hard rock to the bald, tell ’em Spünday called
