Gary Dranow a true love song “Something About You”

Park City, Utah’s Gary Dranow, or in more formal naming convention Gary Dranow and The Manic Emotions recently released their latest single “Something About You” last Friday, January 13th. It marks the fifth single released since last September and further teases their highly anticipated upcoming EP “Destiny Road,” slated for release early 2023. Last we checked in with the band, they had just released the title track from that upcoming EP “Destiny Road.” As the story goes, it’s been long awaited, nearly 25 years in the making, originally recorded on a 2″ 16-track AMPEX previously owned by Jefferson Airplane!

Unfortunately, due to what the band has described as “multiple personal battles,” the original release never happened. With “Something About You,” that sonically charged, psychedelic, classic rock vibe most definitely transcends time and carries over. Outside of the usual quintessential classic rock comparisons I could throw out there, to include Jefferson Airplane as well, they also remind me at times of one of my personal favorites, Roky Erickson. This latest single, however, is a standout by comparison to the previous releases. A sense of deeper sentiment, it is a tried-and-true love song. Dranow describes “Something About You” as:

LISTEN NOW TO GARY DRANOW

A true love song about a man who was empty inside like so many others until he met his one and only. There’s something about her. He was bathed in her love for the rest of his life.

That’s not to say that the song is an outright ballad or anything. Still very much rooted in blues-rock aesthetic, “Something About You” has no shortage of twangy Amerciana, almost Country-ish guitar licks, dynamic chord progressions, and a rocking guitar solo. Even in an emotionally charged lyrical mindset, the band remains upbeat and energetic.

In this particular track, also at times reminds me of The Doors. I would recommend this band for fans of them, as well as the aforementioned, and anyone with a palate for classic rock, blues, and guitar-oriented rock and roll. The band is actively gigging around the Eastern Salt Lake City / Park City area, so keep an eye out if you’re in the area, to catch them live!
