The remarkable and prolific Australian powerhouse Clare Easdown, whose last single “Burned Into My Past” was one of my favorite tracks of the year so far, is already back with another gem: “Wrap Me Up”. This time working with also Australian producer Jburnsmusic, the duo came up with a gorgeous track about love and feeling the love.
Clare Easdown is no stranger to opening herself up and exposing a vulnerable side in her lyrics, and this is why her songs are always so deep and meaningful. She often does it in a very human way, that showcases a very personal experience that everyone else can relate to and this is truly a gift – not many singers have that about them.
The simple and universal nature of the song and lyrics hit like a bullet, as Clare sings about wanting someone to wrap her up “in a velvet cloth of love”. It’s a very vulnerable feeling, about opening up so much to someone that you literally allow them to encircle you completely.
The landscape painted, of velvet cloths and silk sheets, instantly brings a feeling of innocence and purity to this love – it’s pillow talk, but it’s the moment you open to someone and lay all your feelings in the hopes of receiving the same love back. The uncertainty of not getting a response adds a layer of tension to the song but it still ultimately falls on the side of love and hope.
The production from Jburnsmusic is a shining example of how to convey all of this feeling and passion into music. The lo-fi beats, reverb vocals, synth lines – its sound is as intimate as its lyrical content and a wonderful catalyst for never letting the aftermentioned tension overwhelm anything. “Wrap Me Up” is a love song about the moment when you first confess this love using words. There’s already a familiarity and intimacy with the other person, but none of you had ever said it aloud before. So you take the bold step and say it yourself. And you hope you’re not alone in this feeling.
