Kimaya Diggs after dark there’s light “Quincy”

Brand new album “Quincy” by Kimaya Diggs. Good times make life enjoyable, but hardships are those that make people grow and become wiser. That’s a piece of advice that becomes especially apparent once you’ve had to work through troubled times yourself. In the process, you’ll most likely learn to value life and what you actually have in a different light.

And so did Kimaya Diggs, who has emerged from a couple of really devastating and turbulent years. The US singer-songwriter with a warm, caressing storyteller side had to say goodbye to her mom, recover from a vocal surgery that left her unable to sing for a while, learn to cope and live with a bad diagnosis that may shorten her lifespan, and work through a huge emotional rollercoaster that had ensued. The piece of work that came out of it, though inspired by all that endured pain and growth, looks at life from the hopeful and joy-seeking side, looking for the happy things that make life worth living.

Named after a beloved rescue greyhound, a former race dog Quincy, who also passed away during these wild years, the album “Quincy” is home to 11 songs. Each of them tells a story highlighting either the people, the situations, or the emotional states, for instance, “I Hafta Try” speaks of a person so emotionally crashed that they’re unable to communicate normally, but a the same time they hold an endless appreciation for people who still stick around despite all. There’s space for grief and all it brings along, hope, healing, dreams, and copious amounts of love, depression, mood swings, and reshaping of what you really want from life. The realization of how fleeting time can be has ironed out her new goal in life – finding happiness in the things you want to do.

“Quincy was written and recorded during a really hard time in my life. But instead of writing sad songs (already did that on my first album!) I decided to chase the joy that I was missing in my life. I wanted songs that reflected my heartbreak but could also make you dance. I kept being drawn back to Corinne Bailey Rae and Amel Larrieux because they both capture bittersweetness in a way that brings sunshine.”

There are also singles coming from “Quincy”, and the first of them, “If You Love Me” is set to be released this Friday. Independent and entirely chaotic, the song was inspired by a hike she took 3 days after her mom’s death. The beauty of springtime was in stark contrast with how her heart felt back then, the hike ended with her getting lost to the point she had to wander around until finding a local farmer’s home, who agreed to drive her back home. It’s a single that reminds us that life goes on like the cycles of nature. After cold and dark there will be sun and warmth.

“I hope you enjoy this! Every bit of this record was made with love and intention. Expect early-aughts soul vibes and surprising instrumentation with an indie rock backbone.”
