Roger Ricks the multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist from Switzerland has just dropped his first single of 2023 titled, “What A Place” on March 10th. In terms of musical direction, it seems like Ricks is expanding on the sound he’s been exploring on the last single we’ve covered of his, “Lost.” There are some musical parallels between the last two singles by way of some of his recent collaborators and charitable endeavors (donating proceeds to children in need). So, what’s new about the latest release? Well, that’s what we’re here to unpack today kiddos! Let’s check out the latest of Mr. Rick’s stadium-rock musings, shall we?
LISTEN NOW TO “WHAT A PLACE” BY ROGER RICKS ON SPOTIFY
One big takeaway I got from listening to the new single is the groove finds it stride right from the first note, whereas “Lost” was more of a tension builder. The guitar work on “What A Place” is the stand-out feature to me, combining “Zeppelin-like” rock guitar licks with “arena-country-like” steel guitar leads during the verses and intro. I also found the drum work of Chris Brush (an accomplished session drummer for the track) to be quite solid. All other musical arrangements and production was performed by Ricks, as per usual.
The lyrics are another aspect of the song that stands out. They were written by a talented singer-songwriter Emme Pierre, as was the case with the previous single, “Lost.” Combined with the energetic musical arrangements and production, the socially conscious lyricism is clearly intended to be an anthemic effect that resonates with the listener. My favorite line is what sets the tone right at the beginning of the song: “People on a breadline trying to make a deadline.” Overall, Ricks has expressed that the context of the song in its entirety is a “call-to-action” for making the world a better place for future generations.
