The Shining Tongues is a project formed by vocalist/songwriter Daniel Knowles, bassist Sam Mclaughlin, drummer Willie Nash, and guitarist Robin Jax. “I Eat Rubbish” is the first single of their upcoming album. It started as a folk song that transformed into something more exciting and unique through the influence of Patti Smith, Ennio Morricone, and Luther Vandross. The Shining Tongues play with genres to introduce us to a danceable track filled with groovy, almost disco-like baseline and heavy atmospheric harmonies that enhance the track’s storytelling.

The lyrics deal with the idea of overcoming the psychic exhaustion of mass- consumerism. The title came from sitting on a boat on the Thames and noticing these kind of floating skips that suck in garbage floating on the surface of the water. They have the words “I Eat Rubbish” printed on them and they indiscriminately consume anything in their path. I thought of them as being incarnations of semi-divine spirits that eat all the shit we leave behind. It seemed like at apt title. – Daniel Knowles, The Shining Tongues

“I Eat Rubbish” is a direct critique of consumerism, how it exhausts our lives and destroys our environment by inciting us to want things we don’t really need, almost as if it were a disease. As such, the music introduces us to a fever dream through its atmosphere. But somewhat, even though the track covers dark and heavy themes, The Shining Tongues introduces a ray of hope in the form of its melodies and beat: They invite the listener to dance alongside the song, suggesting that maybe the best form of resistance is happiness itself.
