You ever feel like you’re the last one to know? And isn’t it that much more aggravating when it’s something that directly involves you? Marcel van Tetering, (aka I Panic) is singing about that conundrum in his latest single, “Forgot to Tell Me.”

The Dutch artist embraces a span of influences from artists like Tom Waits, Echo & the Bunnymen, and R.E.M. In this latest release, he specifically calls out being inspired by early Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello, but there’s a twist. The delivery is a bit more upbeat and ska like Goldfinger.

Admittedly, I Panic himself says that it can be challenging to categorize his range of influences into just one genre, and he attributes this to growing up around his grandmother who owned a record store. Instead, he asserts: It’s alternative rock with a touch of theatre. Bandcamper alert! You can hear it and support it on Bandcamp now before it’s official release to streaming services on 04-20-2023!

Forgot to Tell Me” carries underlying themes in the lyricism, as is most of I Panic’s work. The writer possesses a personal ethos about penning lyrics, as conveyed in his Spotify bio:

“For me, the lyrics of the songs are just as important as the music. Lyrics should be like storytelling, feeding on the tension of not knowing what will happen.”

That being the case, what the writer seeks to convey in “Forgot to Tell Me” is not just feeling like being “the last to know” when the relationship was over, but also the regrettable realization that once again, the song is about “her”. The song was written and produced by Marcel van Tetering, with exception of the bass that was played by Gerben Westerveld.
