Norwegian indie-folk artist Stian Fjelldal AKA Birds Are Better returns with a mournful yet hopeful new track called “Seven in the Morning”. The singer-songwriter has already released great singles recently such as “Oblivion, Bliss” and “Super Highway“, and this time he’s going for a more emotional route.

Following the footsteps of acts like Loney, dear, and Of Monsters and Men, Stian releases a track that is all about the feels: his approach to indie folk features elements from power pop and synthpop as well. The artist describes his music as a crossover between Simon & Garfunkel and A-Ha, and somehow that’s not enough to describe it. “Seven in the Morning” is his quietest song yet, focused on acoustic guitars and minimal percussion and it shows his craft in his most effective effort yet.

The lyrics talk about finally letting go of someone you once loved but now lost, and it’s heartbreaking. In the most beautiful and fulfilling way that a song could possibly be. It speaks of tragedy with such a hopeful tone that it’s the kind of song that can break anyone. Stian wears his emotions on his sleeve and shares them for everyone to see and feel alongside him with this one.
It’s so emotional that it can bring you to tears even if you haven’t been through it yourself – and that’s not something that’s easily done. Birds Are Better isn’t your ordinary indie folk songwriter, he’s at least ten steps beyond the basics and knows how to make you feel feelings like few other artists can. We need to treasure him because what he does is something special.
