What’s going on ladies and gentlemen, welcome back! It’s your boy MadZen and today we have a brand new single which quite frankly caught me off guard. I’d never listened to Bad Ass Beauty before, I had no idea what her music sounded like, but as soon as I hit that play button I stood in complete awe. What came out of the speakers was totally unexpected!
LaQuinta Prince, AKA Bad Ass Beauty, is an artist from Los Angeles, USA, who has only released three singles so far, including “Broken”. She’s a powerful R&B singer, who is stretching her abilities toward Rock and even heavier genres. Studying at the acclaimed Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, she finds inspiration in a variety of artists that span from Led Zeppelin to Chaka Khan, Beyonce to In This Moment.
Prince is well on her way to turning the rock genre on its ear, by blending the two styles, in order to push Hard Rock/Soul into the mainstream.
“Broken” was inspired by Prince’s past relationships, where manipulation and aggression were the everyday themes. “Don’t ask me for any love/relationship advice. I have no clue what a decent, happy true love relationship is because I’ve never had one. Ever. Ask me about toxic, manipulative, obsessive, controlling, abusive relationships I can write a book”, the artist explains.
I wasn’t sure what to expect at first but as soon as I listened to that eerie synth of the intro I was like “ok, here we go”, and just as my thought end, a wild heavy metal guitar riff appeared. “Broken” turned out to be an explosive and savage metal tune with R&B vocals. A wild expression of nonconformity, and a deep desire to never get back on that old toxic road again.
The chorus is very powerful, and Prince’s vocals are amazing. You can feel the way she felt when she wrote the song, making it easy to sympathize. It has such a crude energy, mixed with the emotions of these two genres that I’d never envisioned put together. A revolutionary act for sure, and the definition of what true art can be. So yeah, listen now!
