Vargen’s classic rock stunner new single “The Bitch in Me”

Swedish singer-songwriter Reine Johansson releases his second single of original songwriting, “The Bitch in Me”, under the moniker Vargen (Swedish for ‘The Wolf’). Reine’s name a made for himself on the Swedish indie press over his Bob Dylan covers – including some tracks fully translated into his native Swedish. The covers are absolutely stunning, and Reine is now recording his first original solo album.

The first track ever released from the forthcoming record was “Mindy Morning” last year, and it gave us a taste of where Reine would be going with his own material. The Bob Dylan and 70s rock influences were still very much present, making something that sound anachronistic and comforting. Now, with “The Bitch in Me”, Reine continues down that path but adds a thing or two to it.

“The Bitch in Me”, accompanied by a beautifully shot live video featuring Reine with his full band and the crowd cheerfully singing along, is a song that takes one step further into the 70s rock kingdom. This time around, we have Reine falling into Neil Young’s territory.

It’s a slow burner, that features the absolute right amount of guitar riffs and a stunning solo, played over a steady base of drum and bass and keys. “The Bitch in Me” worked live so well that it was the reason it was chosen as a single, in reality.

“This wasn’t at all intended as a single, since it doesn’t have an obvious chorus and a lenghty solo section, but it hit off so well live.”

Reine tells that after that burning chemistry, they cut off a few longer instrumental breaks and turned it into what we hear now – definitely a smart move. The fact that the official music video is a live recording is extremely clever because it showcases all of Reine’s charisma and strength as a performer.

Vargen knows his classic rock like the palm of his hand, and borrows from it in a natural and organic way, from Led Zeppelin to Tom Petty. He definitely is on an interesting path, ready to share his own original songs with the world and they sound like instant classics.

The good news is that his album is due to be released later this year, on September 22nd, save the date, I can’t wait!
